Abstract
In this paper the modular lightweight design is introduced as a solution to combine the contrary aspects of modularization and lightweight design. Therefore. the definition and classification of Modular Lightweight Design as well as its challenges and opportunities in application are shown. Because the two different topics are linked a consistent data management is required. Based on a combined product and process model for digital data consistency. a model-based methodical approach for the development of the Modular Lightweight Design is presented. As a demonstration example to explain and to discuss the main aspects of Modular Lightweight Design an aircraft galley is used.
